Scareclaw Play Guide

Scareclaw Play Guide

Main Story Universe Visas Starfrost and representing fear, Scareclaw has an extremely distinctive playstyle: an army of monsters in defensive formation to bolster the power of the main monster to sweep across the opponent. Although the pure-type team is quite weak, Scareclaw's framework (engine) is extremely stable and is a perfect launching pad to combine with countless other tactics!

Introduction

Introduction

Scareclaw is one of the archetypes related to the plot of Visas Starfrost where a man forgets his emotions and those emotions create several things when he's not around. Scareclaw is itself one of those things - it is the first emotional world explored, each world corresponding to a unique summon mechanic - and I think that Scareclaw is the worst among them.

The way this deck operates is that you summon scary monsters ready to scatter horror into your enemy's heart. And then they will hide themselves and lie dormant - your main monster (boss monster) will crush the horde of monsters lying there. And look, now they are being introduced in Duel Links thanks to not only the debut of Visas Starfrost, but also the Archetype Scareclaw in the Princess of Aqua mini box.

The King of Fear (Skill Card)

Scareclaw debuted alongside the Skill named King of Fear. One of the most significant highlights of this Skill is that it comes with absolutely no summoning restrictions. Apart from the passive condition that reduces all effect damage you deal to zero, you are free to combine Scareclaw with field-defining tech cards like Lava Golem, or mix it with decks

The core resource value of King of Fear lies in its second activation effect. By revealing a Visas Starfrost card in hand, the Skill allows you to directly add a monster Scareclaw Reichheart and a Spell Scareclaw Arrival from your deck to your hand. The ability to draw up to 2 cards (+2 advantage) with a single button press is incredibly rare. Although the Skill encourages holding Visas Starfrost in hand, you only need to play one copy since this deck has many ways to search for it. In return, you should play at least two copies of Scareclaw Arrival to avoid the case where a "poor material" draws the unique copy on hand and traps itself by using its own Skill.

The final activation effect of the Skill provides extremely convenient support for setting up defense. If the opponent is controlling a monster or you have Scareclaw Reichheart on the field, you may immediately banish a Scareclaw from your deck or hand onto the field, and especially this card can activate right away in the same turn. Thanks to this mechanic, you will have a very safe retreat path to get the trap Scareclaw Clash – a very scary omni-negate tool. It is worth noting that both the card-draw effect and the trap-banish effect have strict limitations: they can be used only once throughout the entire duel (once per duel).

The monsters in the main deck

Scareclaw Acro (x2)

Scareclaw Acro

Scareclaw Acro

Scareclaw Acro is a piece of the Earth (Land) monster trio of the Beast (Beast) archetype Level 3 of this card family. The card has the ability to easily Special Summon from your hand by placing it in the same column or an adjacent column next to another monster Scareclaw. In the Duel Links dueling space, this means you can call it out almost anywhere on the field.

The main role of Scareclaw Acro is providing a passive stat-boosting effect for the monster Scareclaw that is located in the Extra Monster Zone. Specifically, it gives a massive attack value of up to 300 ATK to each monster in Defense Position that you are controlling. In the 20-card format of Duel Links, you are advised to play 2 copies of this card.

Scareclaw Belone (x2)

Scareclaw Belone

Similar to Acro, Scareclaw Belone is also an Earth-type Beast-level 3 monster that has the exact same Special Summoning condition. You just need to drop it down in the same column or adjacent column next to a Scareclaw, and you'll have more material on the field.

The passive effect that Scareclaw Belone passes to the Scareclaw in the Extra Deck Zone is a piercing damage effect. Just having this is sufficient, but this is a very useful tool to punish opponents who prefer defensive play. The optimal advice is to play 2 copies of this card.

Scareclaw Astra (x2-3)

Scareclaw Astra

Scareclaw Astra

Scareclaw Astra is the final member of the core trio of Level 3 berserk monsters. Like its two brothers, it can Special Summon itself onto the field so easily based on the column position of the monsters Scareclaw has already been placed.

The difference that makes Scareclaw Astra unique in terms of its finishing value lies in its passive effect: it allows the monster Scareclaw to be attacked multiple times during one Battle Phase while being in the Extra Deck. The number of attacks will be exactly equal to the number of Scareclaw monsters you are defending with. This is the key to creating flashy OTK phases. Similarly, 2 copies are perfect for this card.

Scareclaw Reichheart (times 3)

Scareclaw Reichheart

Scareclaw Reichheart

Scareclaw Reichheart is considered an outcast in the main deck because it is a Dark-type monster (Dark), Warrior type (Warrior) Level 4. However, it still shares the special easy Quick Summon mechanic that can be easily summoned from the same column or adjacent column near another Scareclaw.

The value of this card lies in its activation effect when it comes to the field: it allows you to immediately search for a Spell or Trap (back row) of the same type from your hand. Additionally, if there are 3 or more monsters on the field (counting both sides), you will draw an extra 1 card.

This is a super important monster, both providing resources and being an essential link to interact with the card's skills. Never play just 1 copy; you must play 3 copies of this monster to ensure maximum stability.

Visas Starfrost (x1-2)
UR rarity
Visas Starfrost

Visas Starfrost

Visas Starfrost is the main character of this entire storyline and naturally also appears in the deck. This character can Special Summon from hand by themselves by destroying a monster that you control with their own hands, provided that the destroyed monster is different in Type and Attribute from them. Although the card's skill seems to be trying to "seduce" you and encourage you to play up to 3 copies for optimal effect, doing so is unnecessary and can easily clog your deck. Since this card is extremely easy to search through Environmental Spell, you just need to play exactly 1 copy to have enough to operate smoothly.

Spell/Trap

Primitive Planet Reichphobia (x2-3)

Primitive Planet Reichphobia

Primitive Planet Reichphobia

Primitive Planet Reichphobia is the core Field Spell and a critically important search tool of the deck. As soon as it activates, it allows you to immediately search any Scareclaw or Visas Starfrost monster from your hand. Although this search effect is limited to activating only once per turn (hard once per turn), you will always want it to activate successfully at all costs.

Besides that, this card also brings two very good control effects over the battlefield. First, it reduces 100 attack points (ATK) of all opponent monsters for each monster currently on the field (applies even if enemy monsters dare to switch to the battle phase). Second, if there are three or more monsters on the defense side (counting across both decks), you have the right to target and destroy one of the opponent's cards.

As the starting gear that drives the entire gameplay, this is an extremely safe card to invest in and recommend using between 2 to 3 copies within the deck.

Scareclaw Arrival (x2)
SR rarity
Scareclaw Arrival
SR rarity
Scareclaw Arrival

Scareclaw Arrival functions as a "Monster Reborn" tool dedicated to the deck. It makes it easy to revive any Scareclaw monsters or Visas Starfrost from the graveyard to the field to continue building your army.

The value of this card persists even after it has been placed in the graveyard. You can banish it to protect a Link Scareclaw monster from being destroyed by battle or card effects. A perfect shield for your main monster!

Although the effect is quite simple, you are recommended to play two copies. The reason is that the Effect of the deck requires searching for this card within the deck; if you only play one copy and perhaps draw it at the start of the game, your Effect will be completely stuck. One copy for safe searching and one backup is the optimal choice.

Scareclaw Straddle (x1)

Scareclaw Straddle

Scareclaw Straddle is a Quick-Play Spell with high versatility during the battle phase. It has two very interesting effects: one effect provides a significant boost to power stats, and the other effect protects your monsters from being targeted by opponents.

Overall, this is not a card that creates too much influence on the game board or decides the survival of the combo. However, it still provides certain defensive and counterattacking value in specific situations. Using 1 to 2 copies is completely reasonable.

Scareclaw Sclash (x1)

Scareclaw Sclash

Scareclaw Sclash

The first effect of this card allows your monster Scareclaw or Visas Starfrost to attack while in Defense Position (quite similar to the mechanism of Superheavy Samurai).

However, the true and most fearsome power of this card lies in the second effect. Whenever an opponent activates a card effect while you are controlling a monster Scareclaw in the Extra Magic Zone (EMZ), you can send this flipped trap card directly from the field to the Graveyard to completely omni-negate that effect.

This is a shield to protect your combo results. Since this card is extremely easy to find and can be flipped onto the field through Skill, you only need to play just one copy in your deck to make your opponent suffer.

SR rarity
Scareclaw Tri-Heart

Scareclaw Tri-Heart

Scareclaw Tri-Heart is the ultimate boss monster, representing the absolute power of the entire deck. It is a Link 3 monster that demands real dedication: you must strictly use exactly 3 monsters with independent material effect, and cannot "cut corners" by using one Link 2 monster combined with another monster. The terrifying aspect of this card lies in its ability to manipulate and dictate battle conditions. Whenever it remains on the field, all monsters are forced to switch to defense stance. At the same time, it becomes completely immune to all effects issued by monsters in defense stance. Although this armor is useless against opponent's Link monsters (since they cannot defend), it still creates a massive barrier against most conventional tactics. In addition to its combat capability, it is also a resource-generating machine. Once per turn, when it resides in the Extended Monster Zone, it allows you to revive a Scareclaw Level 3 from the grave and search for another Scareclaw to your hand. Remember that this effect locks you into the Scareclaw deck for the rest of the turn. As the heart of the entire strategy, you will certainly want to play between 2 to 3 copies of this tank monster.

Scareclaw Twinsaw

Scareclaw Twin Saw basically functions just like an Icarus Attack trap card version dedicated to this deck. Its basic board-clearing effect has been evaluated as quite stable and useful in actual combat.

However, the most interesting and highly innovative aspect of this card lies in its underfloor effect. If a Level 3 Link monster is on the field, you can banish this card from the graveyard to completely lock it, preventing any player from activating the effects of the Link monster. This promises to be a very fun trap to punish careless opponents!

Scareclaw Decline serves as a tech, allowing you to retrieve an important Environment spell from under the grave for reuse. It also functions as a Book of Moon card to banish opponent monsters.

Despite its versatility, the search effect of this card is considered the slowest in the game. Overall, it is not truly a great card and may be difficult to win a spot in the official tournament deck.

Scareclaw Defanging (x0)

Scareclaw Defanging

Contrary to Decline, Scareclaw Defanging is considered to be a completely crazy card because it carries too many responsibilities! First off, it serves as a magic shield, providing the ability to protect your monsters from being targeted by the opponent.

It doesn't stop there, this card also allows you to banish directly the cards that have been destroyed when battling with Scareclaw monster, preventing the enemy's ability to activate effects under their floor. In addition, it also provides additional card destruction effects on the field. The amount of work this card bears is truly overwhelming!

Gameplay & Combo

Overall Playstyle

Scareclaw is a "Boss Monster Turbo" deck - meaning all your resources and plays serve one single purpose: summoning the main boss monster Scareclaw Tri-Heart as quickly as possible and protecting it.

The playstyle of the deck heavily depends on the skill King of Fear to create board advantage (+2 cards in hand and a direct trap from the deck). Because the skill does not lock you into any specific deck archetype, Scareclaw works best when acting as a hybrid engine combining multiple archetypes rather than being pure-specialized.

  • Power: Has very good OTK potential when going second. By combining Scareclaw Tri-Heart with the armor-piercing ability of Scareclaw Belone and attacking multiple times from Scareclaw Astra, you can easily crush the opponent.

  • Weakness: Extremely fragile! This deck can shatter at the slightest breeze. A single hit from Effect Veiler or D.D. Crow into Scareclaw Light-Heart is enough to get the death sentence. Additionally, focusing all power on a single Boss makes your team an easy target for Nibiru, Kaiju or Lava Golem.

Combo Guide

Below are the basic and standard combos when playing pure Scareclaw. With just one starter card, the skill will handle the remaining parts.

Basic Full Combo (Setting up Tri-Heart & Omni-negate) (Condition: Opening the game with any Level 3 Scareclaw monster in hand).

  1. Normal Summon the Scareclaw monster you have in hand.

  2. Link Summon that monster into the Extra Deck using Scareclaw Light-Heart (Chibi) into the Extra Deck.

  3. Activate the effect of Scareclaw Light-Heart upon entering the field, draw Primitive Planet Reichphobia from the deck onto your hand.

  4. Activate Primitive Planet Reichphobia, search Visas Starfrost onto your hand.

  5. Right now (since you have Visas in hand), activate the first effect of the skill King of Fear, take Scareclaw Reichheart and the spell Scareclaw Arrival from the deck onto your hand.

  6. Activate the effect of Visas Starfrost in hand: destroy Scareclaw Light-Heart from the field to Special Summon itself.

  7. Activate the grave effect of Scareclaw Light-Heart: because you are controlling Visas, it may revive back onto the field.

  8. Activate the Spellcard Scareclaw Arrival, revive the monster Scareclaw Level 3 (at Step 1) from the grave to the field.

  9. (At this point you already have all 3 monsters with effects). Special Summon all of them into the Extra Deck as a whole.

  10. Activate the effect of Scareclaw Tri-Heart: revive the monster Scareclaw Level 3 from the grave, then search another Scareclaw Level 3 any from the deck onto your hand.

  11. Special Summon Scareclaw Reichheart (already taken at Step 5) onto the field in defense mode. Activate its effect to search the Spellcard Scareclaw Straddle, while also drawing 1 extra card (since there are already 3 monster units on the field).

  12. Finally, use the trap-flip effect of the skill (the yellow button on screen): flip the continuous trap Scareclaw Clash from the deck onto the field.

Game Result (End Board):

  • Monster Zone: Scareclaw Tri-Heart sits weakly in the Extra Deck zone, accompanied by 3 Scareclaw monsters rotating in defensive stance (providing passive buff material).

  • Back Row: Trap Scareclaw Clash (an Omni-negate tool against opponent effects) and the spell Scareclaw Straddle (combat buff/defensive counter).

  • Grave (GY): The Spellcard Scareclaw Arrival waits ready to be banished, protecting Tri-Heart from one destruction attempt.

Conclusion

In short, contrary to its name "Scareclaw" (Fearless Claw), this deck's pure format actually has nothing scary in the current meta. Despite having extremely impressive artwork design and an interesting boss-tier resource-management playstyle (a strategy that should sweep every tournament if released in 2013), its fragility against modern restrictive cards makes a pure Scareclaw deck hard to make a big impact. However, don't rush to remove them from your list! The brightest feature of Scareclaw lies in the highly stable engine framework. Instead of forcing them to carry the entire match, use Scareclaw as a perfect supporting piece for other decks. They really shine when hybridized (mixed) with other decks, especially with universal-set cards Visas Starfrost (like Mannadium in the future). If you are a player who loves creativity, is passionate about mixing strategies, or simply preparing resources for upcoming powerful Visas decks, then the Scareclaw framework is definitely a very worthwhile investment to look forward to!
