Therion gameplay guide

Therion gameplay guide

Welcome to this detailed guide on Therion – the deck that is currently dominating and reshaping the entire Duel Links meta with the power of a true "Tier 0" force .
Just kidding, these guys were Tier 0 and didn't get nerfed at all during the KC Cup (Kaiju Cup), but they still dropped to Tier 1 because people figured out how to counter them, constantly feeding them "Eggs," "Lava Golems," and "kaiju," along with Floodgate, lock, stun... and that damn " Power of the Creation " skill.

Even so, the fact that the Duel Links format once ranked it at Tier 0 is already considered "Trash."
Its power is ridiculously low, forcing almost all players in the current format to use Lava Golem or "Egg - Sphere Mode" to have any hope of breaking through defenses. If you're looking for a deck with absolute power to crush any opponent on your ranked climb, Therion is definitely a name you must try!

You can use this Skill's first and second effects once per Duel if your Deck (excluding the Extra Deck) contains 15 or more "Therion" cards. 1: Reveal 1 "Therion" monster in your hand. Add 1 "Therion" card from your Deck to your hand or send it to the GY. Then, add 1 "Endless Engine Argyro System" from outside of your Deck to your hand. 2: If your opponent controls a card, add 1 "Therion" monster from your Deck to your hand, then send up to 3 "Therion" cards from your Deck to the GY.

This skill is the key to Therion's near-perfect stability, providing incredibly powerful search and Graveyard capabilities that rarely brick your deck.

  • Effect 1 (Search & Provide Engine): By revealing 1 Therion monster in your hand, you can search for ANY Therion card from your deck to your hand (including powerful Spell/Trap cards like Therion Cross ). Simultaneously, the skill automatically adds the Endless Engine Argyro System card from outside your deck directly to your hand. This is a crucial piece of the puzzle ensuring you always have resources available to send to the Graveyard.

  • Effect 2: If your opponent is controlling ANY card on the field, you will receive a massive amount of resources completely free: Instantly add 1 Therion monster from your deck to your hand and send 3 Therion cards directly from your deck to the Graveyard (prepare resources to equip them).

The "going first but going last" trick on Turn 1: There's an extremely unconventional trick: use Vaylantz Field Spells (like Shinra Bansho ). When you activate this Environment Spell, it automatically places the remaining Vaylantz Environment Spell ( Koenig Wissen ) to your opponent's field. This immediately satisfies the "opponent has cards" condition of the Skill, allowing you to unleash a massive amount of resources to the Graveyard and draw a card on Turn 1! Or you can summon Galaxy-Eyes Tachyon Primal to your opponent's field.

You can only use each of the following effects of "Therion "King" Regulus" once per turn. ● You can target 1 "Therion" monster or 1 Machine monster in your GY; Special Summon this card from your hand, and if you do, equip that monster to this card. ● When your opponent activates a card or effect (Quick Effect): You can send 1 "Therion" Monster Card from your hand or face-up field to the GY; negate that effect. A "Therion" monster equipped with this card gains 700 ATK, also it can activate the 2nd effect listed above as if it were "Therion "King" Regulus".

As the name suggests, this is our "King" and the most powerful interrupt tool in the deck. Regulus possesses the Omni Negate ability by sending 1 Therion monster (including itself, whether in monster or equipped form) from the field to the Graveyard.

It plays a crucial role in protecting your combo chain from hand traps when you go first, while also interrupting any gameplay attempts by your opponent. (This is also a Tier 8 monster that allows you to perform an Xyz Summon).

Therion "Lily" Borea (x2)

You can only use each of the following effects of "Therion "Lily" Borea" once per turn. ● You can target 1 "Therion" monster or 1 Plant monster in your GY; Special Summon this card from your hand, and if you do, equip that monster to this card. ● You can send 1 card from your hand or field to the GY; add 1 "Therion" Spell/Trap from your Deck to your hand. A "Therion" monster equipped with this card gains 700 ATK, also it can activate the 2nd effect listed above as if it were "Therion "Lily" Borea".

Borea is an indispensable combo starter. He can send any card from his hand or field to the Graveyard to search for a Spell or Trap Therion card (usually Therion Cross or a Field card) from the deck to his hand.

Along with Alasia, Borea set up a 1-card combo that resulted in a dominant first-turn board. (This is also a Tier 8 monster).

You can only use the 1st of the following effects of "Therion "Duke" Yul" once per turn. ● You can target 1 "Therion" monster or 1 Psychic monster in your GY; Special Summon this card from your hand, and if you do, equip that monster to this card. ● While you control an Equip Card, "Therion" monsters you control cannot be destroyed by your opponent's card effects. A "Therion" monster equipped with this card gains 700 ATK, also it gains the 2nd effect listed above as if it were "Therion "Duke" Yul".

This is the deck's strongest defensive shield. As long as any cards on the field are in equipment form, Yul will protect all of your Therion monsters from being destroyed by extreme hard damage .

You can only use each of the following effects of "Therion "Empress" Alasia" once per turn. ● You can target 1 "Therion" monster or 1 Reptile monster in your GY; Special Summon this card from your hand, and if you do, equip that monster to this card. ● You can discard 1 card, then target 1 "Therion" Monster Card in your Spell & Trap Zone; Special Summon it. A "Therion" monster equipped with this card gains 700 ATK, also it can activate the 2nd effect listed above as if it were "Therion "Empress" Alasia".

This is an excellent combo extender that helps you quickly deploy more monsters onto the field.

While Alasia is on the field, you can activate its effect: discard 1 card from your hand to Special Summon the Therion monster currently equipped with that card directly to the field. Alasia is often used to pull another Therion of the same level into the Monster zone, thereby providing enough 2 8-star Bodies to perform Xyz Summons like Draglubion or Hope Harbinger .

You can only use each of the following effects of "Therion "Reaper" Fum" once per turn. ● You can target 1 "Therion" monster or 1 Aqua monster in your GY; Special Summon this card from your hand, and if you do, equip that monster to this card. ● During your opponent's turn (Quick Effect): You can target 1 "Therion" card in your Spell & Trap Zone and 1 card your opponent controls; return them to the hand. A "Therion" monster equipped with this card gains 700 ATK, also it can activate the 2nd effect listed above as if it were "Therion "Reaper" Fum".

A relatively annoying interruption. While on the field, Fum provides a Quick Effect that allows you to bounce one of your Therion-equipped cards (or even Environment cards) back to your hand, in exchange for bounces one of your opponent's cards back to their hand. This effect is excellent for disrupting the pace of your opponent's board play.

You can only use each of the following effects of "Therion "Bull" Ain" once per turn. ● You can target 1 "Therion" monster or 1 Warrior monster in your GY; Special Summon this card from your hand, and if you do, equip that monster to this card. ● You can target 1 "Therion" card you control and 1 card your opponent controls; destroy them. A "Therion" monster equipped with this card gains 700 ATK, also it can activate the 2nd effect listed above as if it were "Therion "Bull" Ain".

A simple yet effective board-clearing tool. During her turn, Ain can destroy one of your cards in exchange for destroying one card on her opponent's field, clearing Vaylantz's Field Card or Galaxy-Eyes Tachyon Primal that she placed on the opponent's field to activate the second effect of her Skill. However, both Fum and Ain are Level 7, with no XYZ effects, so only x1 applies.

You can target up to 3 "Therion" monsters in your GY; Special Summon this card from your hand, and if you do, equip them to this card. You can discard 1 "Endless Engine Argyro System"; destroy all cards your opponent controls. While this card is equipped to a monster: You can Special Summon this card, then equip the monster this card was equipped to, to this card. You can only use each effect of "Therion Irregular" once per turn.

Boss Monster Irregular is designed to clear the board and finish the game. Irregular can Special Summon up to three Therion monsters from the Graveyard, stacking a massive attack power and gaining ALL the effects of those monsters. Notably, you can discard the Endless Engine card to unleash a broom that sweeps the entire opponent's board (destroying all cards the opponent is controlling).

When your opponent activates a monster effect, while you control a "Therion" monster: You can activate 1 of these effects; ● Negate that effect. ● Banish that monster. If you have "Endless Engine Argyro System" in your GY at activation, you can activate both effects (at resolution, negate, then banish). You can only activate 1 "Therion Cross" per turn.

This is an extremely powerful Trap card and a crucial anchor in the deck. As long as you control a Therion monster on the field, you can activate it to negate or banish an opponent's monster. However, the ultimate power of this card lies in the fact that if you have a Spell card... The Endless Engine Argyro System is located in the Graveyard, where you will be allowed to perform BOTH effects simultaneously (both disabling and banishing).

Send 1 "Therion" card from your Deck to the GY. If this card is in your GY: You can target 1 "Therion" card in your GY; if both are still in your GY, add either that card or this card to your hand, and if you do, place the other on the bottom of your Deck. You can only use 1 "Endless Engine Argyro System" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

This is a core engine card that is always guaranteed to be available in your hand at the start of the game, so it doesn't need to be in your deck.

The primary purpose of this spell is to quickly send it to the Graveyard (via discarding or sending from the deck) to maximize the power of Therion Cross . Additionally, while in the Graveyard, it can banish itself to reclaim resources for your hand, or be used by a Therion Irregular monster as a discard cost to activate a "clean sweep" effect that wipes out the entire opponent's board.

When this card is activated: You can add 1 "Therion" monster from your Deck to your hand. Once per turn, if your monster would be destroyed by battle, you can send 1 "Therion" card or 1 "Endless Engine Argyro System" from your Deck to the GY instead. Once per turn, when a monster is destroyed by battle and sent to the GY: You can target 1 "Therion" monster in your GY; add it to your hand. You can only activate 1 "Therion Discolosseum" per turn.

The distinctive Field card provides excellent stability to the entire strategy.
Once activated, it acts as a search tool, allowing you to directly draw a Therion monster (such as Borea, Yul, or Regulus) from your deck to your hand to complete combo chains. Additionally, this card helps maintain the pace of the game by retrieving a Therion monster from the Graveyard to your hand as a resource for the next turn.

The "Trade-In" feature is specifically for Therion. It acts as a tool to enhance card drawing capabilities when needed. By sending resources, it not only helps you draw more cards but also proactively sends Therion monsters to the Graveyard to prepare them as "Equip" for Special Summons.

When this card is activated: Place 1 "Vaylantz" Field Spell from your Deck face-up in your opponent's Field Zone, except "Vaylantz World - Shinra Bansho". If there are 2 cards in the Field Zones: The turn player can target 1 Monster Card in their own Spell & Trap Zone; they Special Summon that card to their own Main Monster Zone in its same column. The turn player can only use this effect of "Vaylantz World - Shinra Bansho" once per turn.

When this card is activated: Place 1 "Vaylantz" Field Spell from your Deck face-up in your opponent's Field Zone, except "Vaylantz World - Konig Wissen". If there are 2 cards in the Field Zones: The turn player can target 1 Effect Monster in the opponent's Main Monster Zone, in the same column as one of the monsters they control; they place that opponent's monster face-up as a Continuous Spell in their Spell & Trap Zone in its same column. (If the zone is occupied, destroy the occupying card.) The turn player can only use this effect of "Vaylantz World - Konig Wissen" once per turn.

This is an incredibly artistic "tech card" that seems tailor-made for Therion. When you activate a card (e.g., Shinra Bansho), it automatically places the remaining Environment Spell card directly into your opponent's Environment zone. This immediately fulfills the "opponent has cards on the field" condition of Therion's ability, allowing you to use resources for free on Turn 1. Additionally, Shinra Bansho 's effect allows you to directly summon a monster currently in the Spell/Trap zone (working on an item) to the field. Conversely, Koenig Wissen (currently on the opponent's field) can be activated to push your opponent's monster into the Spell/Trap zone, acting as a very annoying remover.

2 Level 8 monsters If this card is Special Summoned from the Extra Deck: You can add 1 "Galaxy" or "Tachyon" card from your Deck to your hand. You can detach 2 materials from this card; Special Summon from your Extra Deck, 1 Rank 8 Dragon Xyz Monster with 3000 ATK, using this card you control as material (this is treated as an Xyz Summon, transfer its materials to the Summoned monster), then you can attach 1 "Galaxy" monster from your Extra Deck to it. You can only use each effect of "Divine Golden Shadow Dragon Dragluxion" once per turn.

This Rank 8 Xyz monster acts as an indispensable "transfer station" in the Turn 1 combo chain. By using 2 Rank 8 monsters, Dragl on the field will help you find Tachyon Primal. or Trap Tachyon Transmigration . Immediately afterward, it can transform itself directly to summon Hope Harbinger or Tachyon Dragon.

2 Level 8 monsters Once per turn, when a Spell Card or effect is activated on the field (Quick Effect): You can negate that effect, and if you do, attach that card to this card as material. When an opponent's monster declares an attack: You can detach 1 material from this card; change the attack target to this card and perform damage calculation. If a face-up Xyz Monster(s) you control is destroyed by battle or card effect: You can target 1 face-up Xyz Monster you control; it gains ATK equal to 1 of those destroyed monster's original ATK.

This is one of the most powerful spell negates in the game. Often easily summoned via Dragl, this monster not only negates your opponent's main spells but also "drains" them into its Xyz material, preventing your opponent from recycling them from the Graveyard.

In addition, it has the ability to force opponents to redirect their attacks towards itself, helping to shield the weaker Therion combo fragments.

You can only use each of the following effects of "Number 90: Galaxy-Eyes Photon Lord" once per turn. ● When an opponent's monster activates its effect (Quick Effect): You can detach 1 material from this card; negate that monster's effect, and if the detached material was a "Galaxy" card, destroy that card. ● During your opponent's turn (Quick Effect): You can take 1 "Photon" or "Galaxy" card from your Deck, and either add it to your hand or attach it to this card as material.

The second control piece in the first turn of the defense, providing the ability to negate monster effects (Monster negate). You will typically Xyz Summon this monster by combining it with Tachyon Primal. Along with a Tier 8 Therion monster (such as Regulus or Borea), the simultaneous appearance of Photon Lord and Hope Harbinger will effectively shut down almost all of the opponent's counterattack routes.

The optimal Xyz choice is when you have to go second (Turn 2). By summoning Tachyon Dragon, you will immediately fulfill the condition to directly activate the Counter Trap Tachyon Transmigration card from your hand. This provides a layer of absolute protection when you are trying to disrupt your opponent's board.

This destructive duo is perfect for clearing the board when going second. Their familiar playstyle is a direct Rank-Up overpowering from Photon Lord. Upgrade to Full Armor (dismantle materials to destroy one face-up card), then continue Rank-Up to Cipher Blade Dragon. (Destroy one more random card). A disruptive and extremely annoying Rank 8 Xyz monster. As long as you use Therion "Lily" Borea (a Plant-type monster) as Xyz material to summon this card, Teardrop will possess a Quick Effect that allows you to directly Tribute an opponent's monster. 2 Level 8 monsters You can only Special Summon "Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star(s)" once per turn. You can also Xyz Summon this card by using an "Orcust" Link Monster you control as material. If a card(s) you control would be destroyed by battle or card effect, you can detach 1 material from this card instead. If this card is Special Summoned: You can activate 1 of these effects; ● Send 1 card your opponent controls to the GY. ● Attach 1 of your banished Machine monsters to this card as material.

Another versatile Rank 8 Xyz option for later play situations, Dingirsu offers the ability to discard your opponent's cards by sending them directly to the Graveyard (without destroying or targeting), incredibly useful for dealing with monsters that have strong crowd control resistance.

If this card is Link Summoned: You can negate the effects of all face-up monsters your opponent currently controls. This Link Summoned card is unaffected by your opponent's activated effects, unless they target this card. Once per turn, when your opponent activates a card or effect that Special Summons a monster(s) from the GY (Quick Effect): You can negate the activation.

By strategically placing Therion monsters across the field and using your opponent's main monster as Link material, you can easily eliminate "invincible walls" unaffected by card effects to win the game.

These are two essential board-clearing "gods" in the meta, not just for countering Therion. When facing a Turn 1 board with 5 disruptions (including Hope Harbinger spell-draining, Photon Lord monster blocking, and Regulus Omni-negate, Trap Therion Cross + Tachyon), conventional board-breaking tools like   Dark Hole is completely useless. The best and only solution is to use the enemy's own monster as a sacrifice (Tribute).

This tech card is crucial for protecting your lead. Knowing that your opponent will also be using Lava Golem or Sphere Mode to try and disrupt the board, you can utilize this trap card.

When revealed, Mask of Restrict prohibits both players from sacrificing cards in any form. This makes your 5-negate board virtually invulnerable to the meta's most ruthless board-clearing tools.

During the Main Phase, if your opponent Normal or Special Summoned 5 or more monsters this turn (Quick Effect): You can Tribute as many face-up monsters on the field as possible, and if you do, Special Summon this card from your hand, then Special Summon 1 "Primal Being Token" (Rock/LIGHT/Level 11/ATK ?/DEF ?) to your opponent's field. (This Token's ATK/DEF become the combined original ATK/DEF of the Tributed monsters.) You can only use this effect of "Nibiru, the Primal Being" once per turn.

While you can certainly incorporate traditional trap hand cards into your deck to disrupt your opponent on Turn 1, the meta's focus on board setup significantly diminishes the impact of a single trap hand.

Players often prioritize allocating slots to Lava Golem or cards that increase combo stability, as Lava Golem 's ability to "turn the tables" offers significantly more value than throwing an Effect Veiler which is easily countered by opponents thanks to Regulus 's protection . However, if you want to play it safe, Effect Veiler or hand traps against Graveyard cards are still reasonable additions depending on the matchup.

                  Gameplay & Combos

Therion is a flawless Control & Suppression machine , ONCE a Tier 0 due to its all-around offensive and defensive capabilities in both turns.

                  • When going first (Turn 1): Your ultimate goal is to set up an "impenetrable" board with a maximum of 5 interruptions. The deck utilizes Skills to search for resources, constantly replenishing the Graveyard, thereby Special Summoning Therions (such as Regulus for Omni-negate, Therion Cross trap ) combined with the infamous Tier 8 Xyz cards of Galaxy/Tachyon ( Hope Harbinger , Photon Lord ).

                  • When going second (Turn 2): Thanks to its Auto Skill providing a huge advantage when your opponent has cards on the field, Therion easily overcomes defenses. You'll use Duke Yul as an item to buff all Therion monsters with invincibility, leverage the destructive power of the Xyz chain Full Armor -> Cipher Blade , and finish off the "final boss" Therion Irregular with its board-clearing effect.

                  • Fatal weakness: With a board spread full of powerful monsters, Therion is extremely vulnerable to opponent's area-of-effect sacrifice cards like Lava Golem or Ra's Sphere Mode . Also, taking Floodgates that prevent Hand effects is fatal.
